Spring is finally here, and with that the start of the season for the Cleveland Park Farmers Market!
We begin the year with a new market manager. Meet Mary Ellen Koontz:
I’m originally from York, Pennsylvania, where I grew up visiting the Central Market House’s farmers, butchers, and bakers, (one of whom I worked for in my first job) and getting to know my food and those who grow it. Today, I’m wrapping up my master’s degree in urban planning at Georgetown where I focus on sustainability and community development, including making sure all communities have access to fresh, seasonal, and locally grown food. It goes without saying that markets of all shapes and sizes are near and dear to my heart.
The market opens Saturday, April 20 at 9am and will occur every Saturday through December from 9am til 1pm. Look for returning vendors like Garner’s and Kuhn for produce, and Green Almond Pantry for prepared dips and salads. VegHeaven, a vegan eatery and catering company is a new addition confirmed to join the market, and we will be adding more in the weeks and months to come.
Thanks to the hundreds of responses received from survey about the Market conducted over the winter, Mary Ellen is already working on the many good ideas you offered to expand and strengthen the market, add services, and involve the community—like music, community groups, and kids activities. She also welcomes volunteers to help out, so please email her at email@example.com to join the effort.
Mary Ellen will also have a Farmers Market table at the Sustainability Fair at the Cleveland Park Library on April 13. Stop by and say hi, and get the latest lineup of vendors you’ll be seeing each Saturday.
Look for more information in the weeks and months ahead as we highlight vendors—new and returning—and special events at the market. Mark your calendars now, though, to make sure you visit the market each Saturday to stock up and support the vendors!
